As we continue to process 2013-2014 CA Dream Act applications, we have come across an ongoing issue I’d like to bring to your attention to see if you can help us and our students.
Our CA Dream Act Coordinator has found that many of our prospective high school students are using different variations of their names on the CA Dream Act applications and on their college admissions applications. For non-AB 540 students who have social security numbers, we are able to match up the students’ admissions applications with their FAFSA records. But the CA Dream Act application does not use social security numbers, so it is making it difficult to match up their CA Dream Act application with their admissions application. Many students are using multiple last names, hyphenated names, and middle names which causes a mismatch on our end. Due to their names not being consistent, our office is not able to recognize or pull in the student’s CA Dream Act application. This has caused a situation where we may have their CA Dream Act application, but it is setting in a holding pattern with no action until the student comes in and tells us the problem.
IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR THE DREAM ACT IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU USE THE SAME LEGAL NAME ON ALL DOCUMENTS!
