CALIFORNIA IMMUNIZATION LAW – SENATE BILL 277
Students must have all the immunizations required by California in order to attend school. For more information, please visit SHOTS FOR SCHOOL.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS REQUIRING AN ACTION PLAN AND MEDICATION
- An authorized health care provider who is licensed by the State of California may prescribe medication for students to take at school (Ed Code 49400 & 49423; California Code of Regulations, Title 5, Section 601[a]).
- A new form must be completed each school year and on file in the health office.
- Changes in medication require a new authorization form signed by the health care provider and parent.

SEIZURES:
- SEIZURE ACTION PLAN
- Required for all students who have seizures/epilepsy.

Diabetes School Management:
*Ask the student’s endocrinologist for a plan.
MEDICATIONS:
PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION FORM (*Physician to complete*)
- An authorized health care provider who is licensed by the State of California may prescribe medication for students to take at school (Ed Code 49400 & 49423; California Code of Regulations, Title 5, Section 601[a]).
- A new form must be completed each school year and on file in the health office.
Changes in medication require a new authorization form signed by the health care provider and parent.
- Inhalers & Epi-pens are the only medications that may be carried by the student, medication must be stated on the doctor’s order, & verified by the parent.
- Medication orders must state the name of the medication and the dosage to be used at school.
- Medication must be in the original pharmacy-labeled container.
- Medication must be picked up from the health office at the end of the school year.
- Unclaimed medication will be destroyed at the close of the last day of school.
OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS FORM
- A new form must be completed each school year and on file in the health office.
- The following OTC medications are available in the nurse’s office and can be administered with parent permission, as needed by the nurse:
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or generic
- Calcium Carbonate (Tums)
- Cough drops or throat lozenges
- Ibuprofen (Advil) or generic
PHYSICAL EDUCATION MODIFICATIONS FOR INJURY OR ILLNESS
- Needed when a student has an injury with a recovery time longer than a week.
- A short-term PE excuse is available from the school nurse with a note from the parent for up to three days.
- If there are special considerations (I.e., crutches, special accommodations, diet restrictions, etc.) they should be included on the physician’s order.
- The student must bring a written release from the doctor when cleared.
- All orders/statements of conditions must be written by a doctor licensed and practicing in California.
